Every two weeks, we summarize all notable fundraising announcements and merger and acquisition deals for notable education companies worldwide. We provide key details about each transaction for this to be a helpful resource to keep track of all EdTech fundraising and M&A ventures worldwide.  

Edition 1: Focusing on the first two weeks of January 2015, from the 1st until the 14th. 


CampusTap closed US $500K in Seed Funding for Higher-Ed Social Network

      • Round led by American angel investors based in Boston, MA 
      • Funds will be used for product development, team expansion for the mobile application 
NetDragon Online Raises US $52.5 million in Series A Funding

      • Provider of massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), an online gaming portal, and the most popular smartphone app store platform
      • Aims to leverage mobile internet technologies to improve lifelong education ecosystems
      • Investors include IDG Capital Partners, Vertex Ventures, and Chinese animation producer Alpha Animation
      • Using this new round of funding to increase product development of their online/mobile education platform

        • Launched first iPad "mobile-adaptive-social" accredited degree with a tuition of U.S. $10,000
        • Washington, DC-based company grew its client base by 300% in 2014 
        • Fundraising came in two parts, $5m in January 2015 and $9.5 million in December 2014
Thinkful.pngOnline Programming Educator Thinkful Raised $4.25 million

        • Offers online continuing education services for programmers and developers
        • Currently 3000 students enrolled with 2 or 3 month 'bootcamp' classes, ranging from U.S. $300 to $2000 
        • High completion rates of 70%, driven by 250 engineering teachers 
        • Latest funding round led by Floodgate Fund in addition to RRE Ventures and Quotidian Ventures  
Lynda.jpeg Online Learning & Video Library Lynda.com Raised $186 million in New Funding Round

        • Offers online personal and professional continuing education services
        • Follows a $100 million initial investment from Accel Partners, Spectrom Equity and Meritech
        • Focusing on three potential acquistion targets as well
        • Provies 5,700 classes with 255,00 videos in English, French, German and Spanish 

Mergers and Acquisitions

 Brentwood Associates Acquires Excelligence Learning Corporation

        • Offering over 20,000 products for children, ranging from infancy to 12 years of age
        • 5th acquisition in 2014 for Brentwood Associates Private Equity V, L.P.

        • inResonance, creator of FileMaker platform for schools 
        • Schoolyard, designs websites for schools using open source Drupal
        • Will combine information and communications through a single sign-on and open, customizable solutions from both products 


Newsflo.png  Elsevier Acquires Media Monitoring Company Newsflo

        • Elsevier offers information solutions for the science, health, and technology industries 
        • Newsflo, UK company offering analytics and tracking software to document academic publications and published research 
        • Newsflo currently tracks over 55,000 international media outlets to cultivate trends and intelligence via media mentions
        • Acquisition is immediate, financial terms are non-disclosed 


EdTech Venture to Watch:

Only two weeks into 2015, there has been already been a significant amount of coverage focusing on the emerging Asian EdTech industry. As such, this week's the EdTech Venture to Watch is NetDragon Online. The varied group of investors, featuring in particular an animation company, underscores the growth potential for such an already successful company. Game offerings area already available for Chinese, English, Spanish, and Arabic players and these language offerings will only continue to increase. The range of target users is massive with NetDragon focusing on kindgergarten to high school students; engaging them through web-based and mobile apps. The demand for online education only continues to accelerate and the e-Learning services offered by Asian companies like NetDragon Online continue to innovatively connect with users and provide them with educational games to help fulfil learning needs.
